Who Are You and Why are you Doing This?

My name is Dan Schreiber, and I am a (somewhat) ordinary citizen of Champaign County who has 3 children in Unit 4 schools, knows how to register domain names, and have recently learned how to access public documents.  I am not involved in the criminal justice system in any way - I am a software manager by profession.  I have been deeply troubled by the handling of this case, and, like any parent, I just want our community to be protected from child sexual offenders.

I have struggled mightily with whether to go forward with this site, and what to say about what I have learned, and especially how to say it.   One of my favorite Bible verses is Micah 6:8:  "What does the Lord require of you, but to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God" and this website has severely tested the limits of my ability to do that (although my normal life provides plenty of challenges to live up to that verse too).  How can you both do justice and love kindness if in order to achieve justice you have to hold people publicly accountable for the wrongs that they have done?  How humble is it to put my name on a website as an accuser?  Am I merely throwing stones?  Who am I to accuse others of wrongdoing?

And yet, I have felt nudgings to do something like this for a long time, as I learned more and developed a deeper and deeper sense of injustice about the case.  I don't want to be a lightning rod for angry prosecutors and sexual offenders - it puts me and my family at risk of retaliation.  But, sometimes one simply has to follow through on what they deeply feel called to do, regardless of the outcome.

I also think it is important that Brady Smith and John Piland know who is criticizing them, and have a chance to defend themselves.  This site isn't about personal smears - it is about accountability.  My intent is to be fair, but honest, even if honesty brings out inconvenient truths.  This case has harmed our community too much to be timid, and I totally believe the old adage that you can't have peace without justice.
